***This post is a part of my April A to Z series where this year I will be highlighting different plants each day. Check out this page to see all of my posts combined on one easy sheet. ***
Chamaedorea ‘elgans’
This species of small palm tree can be grown in most areas as a houseplant. Although this plant grows slow, it can reach heights over 6′ tall.

Origin:Southern Mexico & Guatemala
Soil: evenly moist – underwatering is better than overwatering
Light: can tolerate low light up to moderately bright conditions
Temperature: 68-80 degrees F. Slow/ no growth may be seen if the temperature is too cold
Cryptanthus ‘Earth Stars’
These species have a very large range of size. The smallest varieties can stay around 3″ but other varieties can reach 3′ tall. Make sure to figure out how large the variety you are looking at grows before planting in a terrarium.

Glass Box Tropicals offers many varieties. I think my favorite is pictured below Cryptanthus ‘Watermelon Blush’.
Soil: Medium moisture
Light: indirect light but varies based on variety
Temperature: warm
These cryptanthus’ are terrestrial so they do best while planted in substrate and prefer the constant humidity of a terrarium setup.

$7.99/each at Glass Box Tropicals

I really like those “Earth Stars.” I haven’t had good luck with house plants in the past, but those would be fun to have around.
Some of the plants I have seen in terrariums are really pretty. I really like the Earth Stars that you have in your post.

Plucking Of My Heartstrings
So the ‘small palm tree’ you showed, do you know if it’s safe around children? I’m just wanting a little extra greenery and shopping around. Great post!
