Today is the fifteenth day of the April A to Z Challenge. I will be writing about different frog species based on their latin species names! See the introduction here.
Bombina Orientalis – Oriental Fire-Belly Toad
The B. orientalis is toxic, so when threatened they flip to their back and arch their spines. This posture is called unkenreflex. This reaction displays their gorgeous red belly which informs the predator that they are indeed not a tasty snack.

The fire-bellied toad can be found in NE China, Korea, Thailand, southern Japan and a couple regions of Russia. The green back helps them to camouflage into their surroundings as they are found in swampy bush-lands, open meadows and near stagnant and running waters. This species will tend to stay relatively close to the water.

Males have a very soft oop…oop…ooooop call.

In extreme cases, the fire bellied toad may produce so much poison that its entire body covers in a soapy foam.

Oh my goodness! I love your frong theme! These guys are beauties!
Thanks! I have been enjoying the theme as well! I love how beautiful these guys are!
Every time I see one of your photos I wish that I had purchased one of those beautiful glass sculptures of frogs.
I wish you would have too, then you could have shown me some pictures 🙂
Another very beautiful though dangerous frog.
They are! They aren’t that dangerous to humans though. Just gotta wash your hands after handling.
This one is really cool – I like the double-sided color!!!
I like it too! Very cool that it allows them to show their colors, but yet stay camouflaged from above!
He’s very handsome! Clever use of camouflage/defense.
